Abstract
The Esping family emigrated to Illinois from their home in Döderhult, Sweden in 1853. The family line and genealogy is extensive, but this collection focuses mainly on Julius Esping, his wife Sophie Bezelius, and their direct line. Their sons, Julius and Axel, fought in the United States Civil War, and Axel was killed at the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863. John Henry Hauberg was a businessman, philanthropist, civic organizer, researcher, and photographer active in Rock Island and the Quad Cities area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Hauberg and his wife, Susanne Denkmann Hauberg, were very active in the Quad Cities community, serving on many advisory boards and organizing dozens of philanthropic initiatives. Hans Westerlund (1842-1874) was a devout Evangelical Lutheran and a Civil War soldier who served in Company C of the 43rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment (also known as the “Koerner Regiment”) for the United States Army.
